Does This ‘Friend’ Have a Name?

Whenever one of my kids has said, “I’m out with a friend” and the ‘friend’s’ identity isn’t revealed, it arouses suspicion…

“And does this friend have a name?”

Silence.

If there’s nothing amiss, then why not just state the name?

But what if the friend’s name is…Jesus?

Jesus, Son of the living God Who sits enthroned in heaven is never concerned for having his identity exposed–although He commands His name be spoken with reverence.

Names are powerful. When I’m addressed by my first name, it reinforces the fact that I’m worth remembering. Significant.

As are you!

Conversely, it stings a little when my name is forgotten or just wrong…

When I meet someone for the first time, I’ve even added ‘Mary, Mary, quite contrary’ for ease of recall should we interact again. (It won’t be long before they realize the familiar jingle is aptly suited to my personality 😀)

Throughout the years, I’ve been blessed with many precious friends, but the name of my very best friend is Jesus.

The beautiful thing is, Jesus calls me His friend, too. “I have called you friends…” John 15:15

The catch to the two-way relationship is this: “You are my friends if you do what I command.” John 15:14

I have a responsibility to be obedient to Him and to let the world know the name of my friend Jesus.

On some occasions, shame has overruled a conviction to faithful obedience and I’ve opted not to say (or text) His name in conversation with others.

Equates somewhat to the vague response, “I’m out with a friend.”

His heart grieves when I’m given an opportunity to speak His name and I hesitate.

Or refuse.

Or make reference to Jesus with a watered down variation like ‘divine intervention’.

Truth is, this friend of mine has a name. It’s Jesus. He’s the son of the living God Whose set me free from the law of sin and death.

The wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

He’s the reason I celebrate Independence Day every day.

Then you will know the truth (Jesus), and the truth will set you free…So if the Son (Jesus) sets you free, you will be free indeed. John 8:32, 36

If you haven’t made Jesus’ acquaintance, I’d love for you to meet Him. He pursues you through His majestic and glorious creation, placed within you a desire to know Who created it all.

The miracle of life speaks of His intelligent workmanship.

He protects, loves, and provides.

He’s sustained you through the most difficult trials of life.

He’ll never leave nor forsake you.

What a friend we have in Jesus!

Yes, this friend has a name. It’s Jesus. How well do you know Him?

So sad to think there are people who think they have so many “friends” on Facebook and don’t have the true Friend Jesus. You have convicted me to more openly express the name of Jesus when talking with others about my true Friend.

It is sad 🙁 I realize Jesus’ name is divisive and should be spoken with great care but I err too often on the side of “afraid of rejection” when given an opportunity. Thankful He’s your friend, too!
