God is Not Geographically Challenged.

Setting? The Garden of Eden.

Players? Adam and Eve, together in a paradise hanging out with the triune God, still innocent of evil. Sinless. Until their eyes were opened.

But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” Genesis 3:9

I once wondered why the all-knowing God searched around for His first two human beings within Eden, the garden paradise He, Himself, created that was relatively small compared to the vast planet Earth upon which it flourished. Was He, like, confused or something?

No. Unequivocally, no. Almighty God is never confused. Nor does He confuse His children. So, what gives with God’s search for Adam on what sounded, otherwise, like an awesome day in the garden?

Here’s what had already gone down…

When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened and they realized they were naked. Genesis 3:5-7a

In that moment, they’d separated themselves from God. And, sadly, ushered in shame, one of the Devil’s most effective, mind-mangling tools.

Their eyes now open to their sin of disobedience, Adam and Eve attempted to hide from God – which was about as effective as Charlie Brown’s attempt to hide his over-sized, spherical head behind the trunk of a small tree during a game of hide-and-seek.

But God knew where they were. Knowing them intimately, He must have even ‘heard’ their hiding.

Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as He was walking in the garden in the cool of the day and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. Genesis 3:8

And so began His holy search and rescue.

But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” Genesis 3:9

God is not geographically challenged here. I believe His question was meant to drive me to a far deeper level, to examine my heart and determine its exact location.

“Yes, I know where you’re physically located. But where’s your heartWhere’s your mind? And where have you let them take you?”

Should the Lord God come walking around in the garden of my heart in the cool of the day and ask, ‘Mary, where are you?’ He’s not in need of a handy-dandy GPS phone app.God is Not Geographically Challenged-2-picmonkey

He wants me to grab a hold of honesty and agree with Him about my exact location spiritually. Where am I in relation to where God is? Am I in His will or distracted by my own?

Ah, I see God up ahead, behind the rustle of leaves in the cool of the day…searching, pursuing…carrying the weighty ‘Where are you’ question within His lion’s mouth.

And the almighty, omniscient Lord God is not geographically challenged. He just loves me that much that He’d even ask for my spiritual whereabouts.

And, Reader, where exactly are you?

  1. Yep. Necessary for survival. God’s idea anyway since we are limited in our ability to know all things like He does. I, for one, somehow keep trying…
