Holding The Flashlight.

I intended my text response to encourage, a reminder to look to the light. The Light.

He (Jesus) said, “I am the light of the world.

Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

Maybe in the moment it was. Encouraging, that is. But my friend’s answer struck me.

Holding the Flashlight-picmonkey2“Keep holding that flashlight and don’t let go.”

In one statement, I was reminded that I’d been called to bear His Light, to hold it high so others may see.

Jesus challenged,

“If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you?

I’m putting you on a hilltop, on a light stand – shine!

Matthew 5:15 (The Message)

My sister in Christ was walking in what she simply described as a very dark place. Maybe like a deep pit of UnKnOwN. She couldn’t see clearly. Or really not at all. Too weary to feel around for the light switch…if her heavily tested faith even allowed her to believe there was one.

There just seemed no way out of this disillusionment, this unexpected illness of one of her precious children.

Darkness.

This dear friend had lost her way. Fear gripped her. It sank claws into her soul as she begged the Lord,

“Please don’t ask me to give up my son.”

Her momma’s plea jangled around in my brain, seeped into my heart as I prayed on her behalf.

Now, we both knew Jesus, the Light of the world, right? It’s just that she struggled to walk the ‘Whoever follows Me’ part. She’d found it increasingly difficult to walk in darkness, to see where to safely take the next step.

I’ve been there, too, in that pit where darkness seemed a constant – and unpleasant – companion. Until someone flashed the Light in my direction.

John the Baptist did that. Like a trustworthy Boy Scout, he held the Flashlight so others could know the way.

The Way.

John came as a witness to testify concerning that light,

so that through Him (Jesus) all men might believe.

John 1:7

He wasn’t the flashlight.

He himself was not the light; he (John) came only as a witness to the light. John 1:8

Jesus also instructed His disciples that they are to let their light shine.

“…Let your light shine before men…” Matthew 5:16

They were called and I am called to flash His light and give witness to the light’s Source.

But a flashlight does no good if it isn’t turned on and if it isn’t being used to show the way. Holding the Flashlight-6-picmonkeyNo Girl Scout ever earned a wilderness badge by leaving her flashlight behind in her tent.

I know of such things 🙂

There are times when my batteries become weak and my light dim. And, by golly, I need someone to hold the Light for me.

Yooo hoo! Any flashLight holders out there?
