If Only for One Lost Reader…

Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep. Luke 15:6 (NIV)

Whether I like it or not, numbers weigh heavy in ‘author land.’ Potential publishers, agents, editors all want to know,

“How many followers do you have on social media? Are you garnering a good bit of reader engagement from your subscribers? You do have an impressively long email list, right? And Amazon reviews…exceptionally large, like several hundred?”

What if the numerical answer to these pecking questions is…one?

While that effectively squashes any hope of a contract, that one reader is a really big deal to God.

Because that one reader may be lost.

That someone has been encouraged by what I’ve written or found eternal hope in God as a result of reading my inspirational fiction or devotional is the divine work of God whose eyes remain fixed on the one lost reader.

Something precious and significant stood out to me this week as I revisited the Parable of the Lost Sheep. (Luke 15:1-7) Now, I know there were a hundred sheep and I know one was lost and I know the owner of the sheep went searching for it. But the search wasn’t over until he found it.

Right there. Until he found it.

One lone sheep among the many mattered incredibly much.

There will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. Luke 15:4

One reader who’s wandered from the safety of the truth and is now vulnerable to false teachings and hollow philosophy might need words to show him the way back home.

One lost reader is worth the search it took to find him.

While my writing may fall short of impressing someone in position to offer contracts, God may very well use one redeemed reader to impact the world.

When has something you’ve contributed resulted in positive outcomes for only one person or maybe a small number of people?

Mary

Thanks for the reminder that our calling is not all about numbers but the hearts of individuals.

True. I think heaven will be full of those who were changed by our words and we may not know until we get there.
