It’s On My Calendar.

I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing. John 15:5

Last fall, a dear friend texted to mention that my birthday was coming up. Warmth billowed inside my chest. A smile stretched across my face.

I asked…

She responded…

I scrambled to remember her birthday. May? Or no, April. Yes, that’s it. I gave myself a pat on the back, thankful I hadn’t forgotten.

When that same friend texted to assure that our date for prayer time was still going to work, I confirmed that it was fine.

Good memory.

I wrote it down on my calendar.

That warmth again.

Why? Because someone made a point to add me to their schedule. Penned in ink. Something of great value to me mattered enough for her not to forget.

So, just what’s written on my calendar, both the real and the imagined one?

Monday – call the city and complain that recycling didn’t get picked up

its-on-my-calendar-4-picmonkeyTuesday – purchase those shoes…then justify why I need them

Wednesday – fuss with my daughter about her filthy bathroom, unkempt bedroom

Thursday – binge watch three seasons of Fixer Upper

Friday – shop at the mall, but peruse only the clearance racks to assuage guilt

Saturday – indulge in a half gallon of Blue Bell ice cream while making a list of those who’ve offended me

Sundayworship Jesus…

Uh, since when does worship need to be put on my calendar?

Maybe since I shoved aside the call to remain in Christ and allowed prideful, divisive issues and self-indulgences to take priority the other six days.

Where on my calendar have I written down a reminder to gather with other women at the church for an hour of prayer? To purchase a birthday card and mail it? To serve the homeless or in prisons? To make a meal for one in need? To lay down my freedom in Christ when harshly confronted and withhold an unkind response?

What’s on your calendar?

BTW. My birthday is October 13th. Feel free to borrow a pen if you’d like to write that down. You are writing that down, aren’t you?

Mary, got Oct. 13 circled on my new 2017 calendar! A day to thank God for the gift of a sweet little sister with a gift for writing.

  2. It’s affirmation like that which keeps me typing away. Be sure to circle-in RED- February 15th. It’s a pretty special day for me, too 🎈🍴🍰😄
