How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God. How vast is the sum of them!
Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. Psalm 139:17-18a
I spent this past week serving as group leader at Big Stuf, a youth camp held at the same conference center each year in Panama City, Florida.
Following morning worship session and a powerful, relevant message, over 1600 students in attendance from across the country were let loose in the afternoon to enjoy the beach.
Did any of you imagine the inevitable mix of a mass of teenagers with an expansive seashore?
In a word, sand.
Lots of it.
Grains gravitated from shore to the hotel room floor no matter the thoroughness of outside foot rinsing. Tenacious grains found their way into my suitcase, my Bible bag, and in my bed, despite valiant effort to dust my feet before slipping under the covers.
They die a slow death down the drain.
A few somehow ended up between my teeth.
An OCD nightmare.
Agressive sweeping only moves transient grains from one place to another, so good luck with that.
But rather than bemoan the inescapable and pervasive grains within the bedsheets and between my toes, I found them to be a comforting reminder.
How precious to me are Your thoughts, O God. How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. Psalm 139:17-18a (NIV)
Long before I was conceived, God’s thoughts toward me were–and are–replete with kindness, grace, and mercy. They are employed for my good.
They are measureless, countless, and outnumber the grains of the seashore.
The Psalmist, King David, must have known the futility of sand counting because he said:
“Were I to count them…”
So now to consider each tiny grain clinging to my skin as another of God’s precious thoughts toward me, what a supremely awesome, divine visual aid.
One I welcome.
A precious truth He intends–like sand–to stick.

As you stroll along the shore this summer and dig your toes into the sand, stop to consider God’s immeasurable, precious, and vast thoughts toward you.
Just don’t bother trying to count them.
He’s got you outnumbered. 😉
