Yep. Still in Effect.

Your Word, O Lord is eternal. It stands firm in the heavens. Psalm 119:89

Any kid of mine who still lives at home is responsible for taking care of their space and their things. That is, clean the bathroom, keep the bedroom in some semblance of order, put dishes in the dishwasher, and do their laundry.

yep-still-in-effect-3-picmonkeyNot too long ago, I realized that this Felkins’ family house rule had, on some level, been repeatedly disregarded by one in particular. I let it go awhile until, one afternoon, the visual chaos pushed me beyond the bounds.

So I reminded him, “Each week, you gotta keep your bedroom and bathroom clean.”

While stabbing a fork into a home made meal, his playful response drifted from the kitchen table. “Oh, that’s still in effect, huh?”

All prepped to whap him on the head with a rubber scraper, I loosened my grip on the handle when I saw the grin on his face and the sparkle in his eye.

Okay, he was joking, but I suspect he’d hoped Mom would dump the rule.

I hadn’t. And I won’t. The rule is still in effect.

So long as you live here, enjoy our shelter, use our laundry detergent, and eat our Cheerios, then you’ll keep your space clean.

Do I consider God’s word in the same way? yep-still-in-effect-picmonkeyI mean, do I read ‘Be kind and compassionate’ one day, but figure that’s no longer in effect when someone is offensive?

Uh uh. Still in effect.

Do I read, ‘Make every effort to live at peace with everyone’ but dump it when World War III begins over what seems to be an irreconcilable issue?

Nope. Still in effect.

Do I read ‘God gives grace to the humble’ but disregard humility when I’ve accomplished a great thing?

Um, still in effect.

His ways, His precepts, His commandments are still in effect. Because His love is that big and that far-reaching.

When I consider Thou shall not steal, murder or lie, it’s a mighty good thing His rules are still in effect. Because I’ve got no margin to be the victim of a Ten Commandment rule breaker.

Your word, O Lord, is eternal. It stands firm in the heavens. Psalm 119:89

And neither has my disregard of God’s rules ever led to peace. If they feel oppressive or unfair, His rules aren’t the problem. It’s my attitude.

Since the beginning of time, His rules have been – and still are – immutable. Considering that, how will I roll into 2017? Determined to follow His rules closely? Or will I live as though He’s dumped one or two of them to assure my comfort?

Ah, but He hasn’t and He won’t. His perfect laws are still in effect.

They’ll be in effect tomorrow and for all the tomorrows He gives me after that.
