Man, Am I Stuffed!
For in Christ, all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form,
and you have been given fullness in Christ. Colossians 2:9-10a
I’m a former member of the clean your plate club, the one where I had to eat all that’d been served. It didn’t matter a lick that my stomach hollered ‘Stop, already!’ several bites earlier. Dad was known to raise arch brows of judgment if ever a one of his children didn’t honor Mom by consuming what’d been put before them.
This notion of stopping when full? It wasn’t up for discussion. Unfortunately, it took far more napkins than I’d calculated in which to spit out a serving of canned red beets… with no easy way to dispose of them before Mom and Dad became aware.
Which they did. And then served up a duly deserved lecture. Without dessert.
I ended my membership in the clean your plate club years ago, stopped paying my dues, shredded the card. I haven’t eaten a red beet in any form since those days and, I assure you, I never will. Bleh.
Today I enjoy the freedom of eating too little, just enough, or, at times, entirely too much if the food is simply that good.
Jesus Christ found Himself stuffed, too.
For in Christ, all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form. Col 2:9a
There was no laying down of the fork here with rounded eyes, a hand raised in surrender, and a shove away from the table. God filled Jesus full with the fullness of Himself.
All of God filled all of Jesus.
He was quite happy about it, too. God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him (Col 1:19).
And all of Jesus filled all of me.
Apostle Paul prayed that followers of Jesus Christ would be able to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ.
…and to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:18-19).
Knowledge of His wide-long-high-deep love is filling. Really filling
Man, am I ever grateful to be so stuffed!
The next time I feel the need to catch my breath at the dinner table, I’ll simply attribute it to the indwelling presence of Almighty God within me and not the fact that I’ve overeaten and should have stopped a few bites back 🙁
